This Week in Carolyn Ryan Media Bias

If you read The New York Times, you might ask yourself, "What hospital closing crisis ?"

In the last week, doctors, nurses, medical staff, Brooklyn residents, advocates for improved healthcare access, and even politicians (!) have been staging almost daily demonstrations in an effort to apply political pressure on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to save Long Island College Hospital (LICH).

Last Sunday, "Public Advocate and mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio rallied with nurses and healthcare workers outside the struggling Long Island College Hospital Sunday, calling on Gov. Cuomo to intervene to save the Cobble Hill facility and another Brooklyn hospital," reported Metro New York. On Monday, several hundred activists congregated outside Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office, demanding that the governor take state action to save LICH. On Wednesday, NYSNA ED Jill Furillo, RN ; President-Elect Judy Sheridan Gonzalez, RN ; Mr. de Blasio ; and about a dozen others were arrested in a trying to deliver a petition with approximately 7,000 signatures to SUNY officials in an effort to save LICH. On Thursday, Assemblywoman Joan Millman was among three people arrested at Brooklyn Bridge in another LICH protest.

But if you've been reading the "political coverage" on The New York Times, you would have only read one surly blog posting by Anemona Hartocollis (@anemonanyc), the hospital closing reporter. Ms. Hartocollis, who is normally asleep at the switch, or out shopping at for trendy shoes, wrote an article glamourising mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio for getting arrested on Wednesday's act of civil disobedience.

But Ms. Hartocollis's blog posting completely left out the growing community's concerns with the chicanery going on with Gov. Cuomo's deliberate attempts to shut down LICH.

But in all of the hospital closing articles or blog postings that Ms. Hartocollis has ever written, she's never managed to connect the dots with the pressure that the for-profit insurance industry and austerity cuts to healthcare being made by politicians are each having on the finances of New York City hospitals. Too bad Ms. Hartocollis shares the same lack of political depth in her reporting as Carolyn Ryan, the new politics editor, at The New York Times, has in her editing.

It might have been premature to think that Ms. Ryan had evolved from her identity politics support for her fellow lesbian mayoral candidate, Christine Quinn.

Carolyn Ryan Relents ; NYTimes Publishes Critical Look At Christine Quinn

Update : Carolyn Ryan is backsliding into her biased journalism.

Activists have waged a months-long campaign to expose the media bias by The New York Times and one of its principal editors, Carolyn Ryan, that favoured New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. Activists held protests outside of The NYTimes building, produced a series of YouTube videos, launched a Facebook page, and blogged about the media bias. At long last, The NYTimes finally publishes a critical look at Speaker Quinn. Link : Offstage, a Proudly Brash Quinn Isn’t Afraid to Let Her Fury Fly. Please let us know what you think ?

Is Hunter Walker Sexual Orientation Profiling Chirlane McCray ?

The reporter Hunter Walker from The New York Observer wrote an article that was published today that sensationalises Bill de Blasio's wife's sexual orientation. The tabloid headline was : "The Lesbian Past of Bill de Blasio's Wife." Mr. Walker seems to want to make an issue of Chirlane McCray's exploration of her sexual orientation. Why does Mr. Walker believe that Ms. McCray's sexual orientation is a campaign issue ? In Mr. Walker's small mind, is Ms. McCray's sexual orientation an impediment for Mr. De Blasio to do his job, or to run for public office, or to continue his work for the citizens of New York City ?

Mr. Walker seems to have forgotten that marriage equality is now the law in New York State. He also seems to think that sexual orientation can only fit into a false social construct of a binary world of either heterosexual or homosexual. How does Mr. Walker's binary worldview inform his discriminatory and sensationalistic writing ? Do bisexuals not deserve to get married and have children ? You decide.

Look at some of the hate that Mr. Walker's article has already inspired : "Born That Way" -- Not !

Christine Quinn and Mike Bloomberg Take a Parody Cruise on The Love Boat

In the most recent example of biased journalism published by The New York Times, the editors never show a photograph of New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn's wife. Instead, in the media, we generally only see photographs of Speaker Quinn with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. In this political parody video, we let our imagination have ... some fun.

NYT Publishes Biased Article About St. Vincent's Hospital

From the Demand A Hospital listserv comes an article that continues in the sorry pattern of media bias and no journalism ethics by Carolyn Ryan and other editors at The New York Times :

Is The NYTimes Telling us That a Drug Store Can Replace St. Vincent's Hospital to Protect Christine Quinn From Being Challenged By Activists and Residents, who Live in the Lower West Side, For Having Allowed the Hospital to Close ?

The New York Times article, New Style of Health Care Emerges to Fill Hospital’s Void and to Prop Up Christine Quinn, claims that the community seems to be doing fine without a hospital in the area -- this, in spite of the fact that North Shore-LIJ took a $10 million state grant for a money-losing urgent care center that it voluntarily closed, because it was only seeing 2 patients per day ! Nobody with heart attacks, trauma injuries, or other life-and-death healthcare emergencies would rightly trust an urgent care center with their lives.

The failure of the first North Shore-LIJ urgent care center bodes poorly for the stand alone ER. What will happen when the stand alone ER fails, as it surely will, because its business model is predicated on people willingly accepting emergency treatment from an inferior urgent care center, which any reasonable person will tell you is certainly not the case -- and can be proven by the failure of North Shore-LIJ's first urgent care center.

Was the $10 million grant a back-door incentive to North Shore-LIJ to serve as a bait-and-switch to clear the way for Bill Rudin to build his luxury condos ? Our tax money could have been used with other monies to help restructure or save St. Vincent's. We'll never know what could have been an alternate outcome, because Brad Hoylman, Christine Quinn, and others were rigging everything in favor of Rudin, who is connected to the Partnership of New York, where Brad worked.

Dr. David Kaufman is quoted in the article advocating for the need for medical care that cannot be provided by the proliferation of urgent care centers. Bravo for continuing to speak the truth as we know it.

And North Shore-LIJ CEO Michael Dowling, who is grossly addicted to his fat CEO pay package, criticises people for wanting a full-service hospital to replace St. Vincent's.

“Good hospitals are important, but you don’t need more than you need,” Mr. Dowling said. “In many cases, we’ve been addicted to inpatient beds. We can’t be addicted to them in the future.”
