Far Rockaway Queens Fire In Breezy Point

As of 11 p.m., fires were destroying a considerable section of Breezy Point, on Rockaway peninsula in Queens, after Hurricane Sandy created widespread damage after making landfall in Southern New Jersey. Firefighters in New York City are trying to respond to many emergency calls for help.

Far Rockaway, Queens, is in a dangerous, but not unique predicament. In the last year, Peninsula Hospital Center closed. It is unclear how many community resources are available in Far Rockaway, Queens, to deal with the safety emergencies created by Hurricane Sandy.

Other communities, where there are no more hospitals, like in the Lower West Sid of Manhattan, where St. Vincent's Hospital was closed so that City Council could approve a controversial zone-busting luxury condo conversion plan by the Rudin family.
